Although the main Destiny franchise is continuing to receive updates after Destiny 2‘s last expansion, The Final Shape, the announcement of a new mobile game set in the Destiny universe could give fans something else to look forward to. Since the release of the original Destiny in 2014, the franchise has received several expansions and one major sequel, Destiny 2, but developer Bungie has announced no plans to develop more games in the franchise.
As of October 14, however, Destiny: Rising has been announced as a new mobile game set in the Destiny universe, with a cinematic trailer and an upcoming closed alpha test starting on November 1. Currently, the mobile title has no set release date, but interested fans can pre-register for the upcoming closed alpha on the official Destiny: Rising website. The game is being developed and published by NetEase Games (Once Human, Dead By Daylight Mobile), and licensed by Destiny developer Bungie.

How Destiny: Rising’s Gameplay Will Work
As a game, Destiny: Rising‘s first previews show that the game is attempting to faithfully adapt the gameplay of Destiny to a mobile platform, with the ability to swap between first-person and third-person perspectives, 6-player co-op missions, PVE and PVP game modes, and more casual or group-oriented social elements. Where Destiny: Rising seems to differ from the main games, however, is in its playable characters, as Rising will allow players to choose from various Destiny characters alongside the game’s customizable main protagonist, “Wolf”.

After ending one saga, Bungie has detailed what to expect from Destiny 2 as it continues into 2025, braves new frontiers, and begins a new saga.
Additionally, the game’s gear system is a somewhat stripped-down version of Destiny‘s, giving players two slots for weapons (one Primary and one Power) and one slot for a Relic, with each character having different equipable weapon types, and Relics influencing a character’s abilities. Additionally, Rising will include multiple new PVE and PVP game modes on top of the standard modes already present in the main Destiny games.
Our Take: Is A Mobile Destiny-Style Game Just What Fans Need?
Destiny: Rising Is A Promising Concept With Some Big Red Flags
Of course, with both Destiny and Destiny 2 being exclusive to non-portable consoles and PC, a mobile Destiny game could fill an in-demand niche for the franchise, allowing fans to play Destiny on the go. Unfortunately, however, Destiny: Rising developer NetEase doesn’t have the best reputation when it comes to monetization in other mobile games, and, in my own personal experience, mobile game adaptations of established game franchises, like Diablo Immortal or Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat, often fail to match up to the quality of the original games.

Additionally, while it hasn’t been confirmed, the focus on a cast of individual characters might imply that Destiny: Rising could be using a gacha system, which, while accepted in the likes of Genshin Impact, may still prove controversial for Destiny fans looking to check out the game. If handled correctly, Destiny: Rising could be a very appealing prospect for fans of the original Destiny games, but doubts about the game’s business model may hold it back.
