Google has been developing Android 16 for a while, and the company has now officially revealed several of its features. Although many expected the announcement to happen during the Google I/O 2025 event, the tech giant opted to showcase the update early through a dedicated Android Show held ahead of its annual conference. Along with Android 16, Google has showcased Wear OS 6, Gemini advancements and more AI-powered security features. Let’s take a look at all the announcements in detail.

Android 16 and Wear OS 6 redesign

Google’s design approach for Android, known as Material Expressive 3, has been gradually evolving over the years. However, the upcoming Material 3 Expressive marks the most significant shift yet, introducing a livelier mix of animations, typography, and colour schemes.

According to Google, these updates aim to enhance clarity and usability while also giving the interface a fresher, more youthful appeal. From the previews shared by the company, both Android 16 and Wear OS 6 now feel more dynamic and engaging, with a notably more vibrant and playful aesthetic. Android users can also look forward to expanded functionality, such as additional tools in Quick Settings and greater flexibility when arranging apps and widgets on the home screen. Want to know in detail? Here is everything coming to Android 16 and Wear OS 6.

    Android 16 security features

Each new Android release typically brings a host of security enhancements, and Android 16 is no exception. Google has outlined several upcoming features aimed at bolstering user protection.

One key update involves an expansion of its AI-powered system for identifying spam messages and calls. This model will now be capable of recognising more sophisticated scams, including newer threats such as fraudulent road toll alerts.

Another upcoming feature will allow users to grant accessibility permissions during a call with an unknown number—helpful for certain legitimate use cases. In addition, a new tool called Key Verifier will enable users to exchange encryption keys, offering an extra layer of reassurance that the person on the other end of the conversation is indeed who they claim to be.

Google is also reworking its device-tracking platform. The current Find My Device network is being replaced with a new system called Find Hub. This central hub will allow users to locate their Android devices, compatible accessories, and tracking tags all from one place. The standout improvement here is enhanced support for ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, which allows for more accurate tracking. Devices registered in Find Hub will also be able to use satellite connectivity from your phone to remain traceable, even in areas without a mobile signal.

    Gemini features

Google is continuing to expand the reach of its Gemini AI assistant, having already made it the default option on Android devices and introduced it on the web and iOS. Now, the company is integrating Gemini into even more of its platforms, including Wear OS—used in smartwatches like Samsung’s Galaxy Watch and Google’s own Pixel Watch—alongside Google TV and Android Auto.

This rollout means Gemini will take over tasks previously handled by Google Assistant, such as setting alarms or managing reminders, but with the added advantage of more fluid and conversational interactions. In vehicles running Android Auto or Google Built-in, users will also be able to access Gemini Live, a feature that enables real-time conversations with the AI on virtually any subject.

On Google TV, Gemini will help users discover films and shows tailored to their tastes, while also offering general assistance like answering queries or providing actor details. The assistant is also headed to Google’s upcoming Android XR platform, although the firm has hinted that it will reserve further details on its mixed-reality ambitions for the Google I/O event scheduled for May 20.
