More customers in China will soon have easier access to Apple Music.
The American streaming provider and China Mobile, a leading Chinese telecom company, signed a new partnership on October 18th, Hong Kong financial news outlet AASTOCKS reported. China Mobile customers can now subscribe to Apple Music via the China Mobile app or at the carrier’s retail stores.
The move is expected to significantly expand Apple Music’s presence in the world’s second-largest economy, where it first launched in 2015. It’s the sole Western streaming provider operating in the North Asian country, according to MIDiA Research. Most foreign streaming platforms require a VPN to access.
Apple Music has been increasing efforts to win over Chinese consumers in recent years. In 2018, it partnered with Chinese social media platform Douyin and expanded its classical music app to mainland China this year.
However, “Apple Music is not very popular among Chinese consumers because its collection of songs is quite limited,” market research firm Daxue Consulting pointed out in a recent report.
