With less than two days to go for Apple’s upcoming Glowtime event, many are excited about the upcoming AI features iOS 18 will offer. Over the years, the iPhone has become synonymous with mobile photography, thanks to their consistent innovation in the camera department. This time too, there is considerable buzz around the iPhone 16 Pro series, with many anticipating big changes.
There may be some good news. It has been learned that the iPhone 16 Pro will bring some new features that will enhance the photography experience. From camera upgrades to new physical buttons, here are 7 new camera features expected to make their way on the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max.
- 01
More detailed ultrawide and macro shots
Both the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to boast a 48MP ultrawide camera, which, if true, will be a huge upgrade over the iPhone 15 Pro’s 12MP sensor.
The new sensor in combination with the increased megapixel count should result in much more detailed images, especially in low light conditions. The upgraded camera is also expected to bring improvements to the macro mode, significantly improving the overall quality of close up shots.
- 02
Improved video recording
According to a new report by 9to5Mac, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will be able to record 4K videos at 120fps, something the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max cannot. The tech giant is also reportedly upgrading QuickTake from 1080p to 4K.
- 03
Better optical zoom for the iPhone 16 Pro
Currently exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple is expected to bring the tetraprism camera to the iPhone 16 Pro, meaning both the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will support at least 5x optical zoom and 25x digital zoom.
- 04
New Sony sensor for main camera
Rumour also has it that Apple will be using an upgraded Sony sensor for the iPhone 16 Pro’s main camera. However, it is still unclear if the new sensor will be limited to iPhone 16 Pro Max.
- 05
Capture button for all iPhone 16 series models
All four models in the iPhone 16 series will sport the much anticipated “Capture button”, which will allow users quick access to the phone’s camera. Speculation has it that the new button will be located on the right side of the device and allow users to quickly launch the app and control actions like zoom level, exposure and even act as a shutter button.
- 06
Anti-reflective coating
When shooting in bright environments, one of the most common problems faced by users worldwide is lens flare. Apple, however, may have a fix for the issue.
Speculation has it that the Cupertino based tech giant is testing a new “atomic layer deposition” lens coating for the iPhone 16 Pro series, which could help minimise these reflections.
- 07
Support for JPEG-XL
The iPhone 16 Pro is also rumoured to get support for JPEG-XL. For those not in the know, this format supports both lossy and lossless compression and helps users save high quality images at a lesser file size while supporting a wide colour gamut, HDR and progressive rendering.
