When it comes to venerable RPG franchises, one name that scarcely touches the lips of the mainstream is Wizardry. This series of first-person dungeon crawlers predates even mainstays like Ultima Underworld and the Elder Scrolls series. And now, developer Drecom is set to bring their own take to mobile with Wizardry Variants Daphne.
It should come as little surprise that while Wizardry is more of a historical footnote here in the West, in the East it’s considered a major inspiration. And Wizardry Variants Daphne, with its slightly more Japanesque presentation, shows all the love that they have on the other side of the world for this venerable franchise.
But enough lollygagging – what does it feature? Well, Wizardry Variants Daphne sees you plunge into fully-realised 3D dungeons, progressing along static paths before dropping into random encounters as you loot treasure, equipment and more to increase your power. Once you’re done, head back to town to restock and resupply, rinse and repeat!

The popularity of the Wizardry series abroad has inspired many of the mainstays we may think of as homegrown in Japanese RPGs. So it’s great to see the game get some more attention. Although given this is a free-to-play game, I reckon I’ll reserve judgement until we find out more about how it actually plays, as the hardcore dungeon-crawling action of something like Wizardry is hardly conducive to premium currencies and other necessities of mobile.
